Study Abroad in Stellenbosch: Academics

Stellenbosch University expands its course offerings and programs each year. The aim of the academic program is to give students an introduction to and an overview of South African history, politics, art, literature, science and culture. Each module is presented by lecturers from the University, the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation and various presenters from the private sector. An academic staff member will accompany students on all excursions that are included in the official program.

Attendance

Due to the intensive nature of the program, students must attend all lectures and excursions to earn academic credit. Evaluation takes place in the form of written assignments that must be submitted during the program or up to one month after the program’s end.

Course load

AIFS students can enroll in 200 level courses (equivalent to American 300 level). Courses are taught in English and meet for 30 academic hours per course plus field trips and outside work. All students take Course 1 (for 2 credits). The two remaining courses are selected from Courses 2 to 8. (Please note that as some courses run concurrently, only certain combinations of courses are possible). Each course is worth 2 credits, giving a total of 6 credits.

Credits

The University recommends 6 credits for the Traditional Program. The number of credits awarded is at the discretion of the students’ home institution.

Grades

No AIFS participant is permitted to take a course without receiving a letter grade. Pass/Fail grade options are not available.

Transcripts

Transcripts are issued and mailed directly to the student’s home university one month after the end of the program.
