Study Abroad in San José: Student Life

Visas

U.S. citizens automatically get a tourist visa when they enter Costa Rica, which allows them to stay 90 days (over 12 weeks). Since AIFS offers optional excursions to Nicaragua and Panama, students on one of those excursions are issued another 90-day visa. Veritas University will issue a letter confirming enrolment to 16-week students if proof is required.

Cultural Activities

Both inside and outside the classroom students will have the opportunity to participate in a rich program of cultural activities organized by the University and the AIFS Resident Director. These may include tropical dance lessons, sports, museum, market and theater visits plus a chance to participate in a conversation partner program with Costa Rican students. There is always something going on and something to do on weekends.

Computer facilities

Computer access is available at the University library computer lab. There are also plenty of high-speed Internet cafés in San José. On-line rates at Internet cafés are about $2 per hour. Some also offer printing, scanning and faxing services. Wireless is available on campus.

Community involvement

One of the best ways for students to immerse themselves in another culture is by working in the community. Students who meet relevant criteria can volunteer in projects with children. Placements are made after arrival.

Sports

Costa Rica is ideal for those who love the outdoors. There are facilities for cycling, running and working out. A gym 2 blocks from Veritas University offers a discounted fee of $25 per month to Veritas students.

Transportation Allowance

AIFS provides a monthly transport allowance to students. If you prefer, AIFS will provide monthly bike rental instead. You must pay an $80 deposit for a bike, which is refundable if the bike is returned in good condition.
